Memories of Banff: Bright Sheng blazes the trail with his provocative personalized music
Sometimes it pays to take one’s time when evaluating new music. It has been nearly one month since I heard the North American première of The Blazing Mirage at Rolston Recital Hall, offered by the Banff Centre’s Pulitzer prize-winning composer-in-residence Bright Sheng, featuring cellist Trey Lee. I wanted to think very carefully about this magnificent work, and have time to do more research on how Mr. Sheng cultivates his approach to compositional style.
